UC Regents Information

The University of California was founded in 1868, and the governance of the University was entrusted to an independent corporation known as The Regents of the University of California.

Composition

The Board of Regents consists of 26 members. Seventeen of these members are appointed by a Governor to 12-year terms; seven, including the President of the University, are ex-officio members; and one of the members is a Student Regent appointed to a one-year term. In addition, two faculty members - the chair and vice chair of the Academic Council - sit on the Board as non-voting members. Click here for an official roster.

Note: There currently exists a vacancy created by the resignation of former Regent Haim Saban in early September 2004.

Let the Regents Know What You Think

There are three ways to let the Regents hear your voice:

  1. Write a Letter - The Regents are accountable to the citizens of the State of California. Let them know how you feel about what they are doing by writing them a letter. Click here to find the contact information for every Regent.
  2. Speak at a Regents Meeting - Prior to each Regents Meeting, there is time allotted for public comment. You can sign up as late as the day of the meeting. Each speaker is usually allotted 2 minutes to address the Board of Regents. A strong student voice during this time can impact Regents’ decisions.
  3. Contact Your Campus UCSA Representative - UCSA is the recognized voice of the UC students and consequently has the ear of the Regents and the Office of the President. During each Regents Meeting, four UCSA representatives discuss student issues directly with the Regents. If there is something that you feel needs to be addressed, let us know!
