Each year, the UCSA Board of Directors, the Council of Student Body Presidents, and the Regents' Special Committee to Select a Student Regent select a student to serve as a full Regent of the University of California. The Student Regent position was created as the result of a successful UCSA campaign to gain a student vote on the governing Board of UC. The working relationship between the Student Regent and UCSA typically has, and continues to be, a close and powerful one.
The Student Regent serves a one-year term as a full voting member of the UC Board of Regents, attending all meetings of the Board and its Committees. Prior to their service as a full voting member, the appointee holds the title "Regent-designate" and is invited to participate in all meetings of the Board and of its Committees, but without a vote. Student Regents provide a crucial voice on the Board of Regents during key decisions on student fees, financial aid, admissions and eligibility, and budget priorities, among others. Student Regents have spearheaded many initiatives to increase access, affordability, and quality.
